Series are multiple stories that go together; the order they are listed in on the tables of contents and directory pages are their chronological orders within the universe, not the order they were written or posted in. A tilde (~) denotes an original fiction series, while an abbreviation such as HP denotes a fanfiction series.

Kenshin knocked Aoshi back into the wall, slamming his wrist and knocking his one remaining kodachi from his hand. The taller man made a dive for it to defend himself, but Kenshin knocked him back into the wall again, the blunt side of his reverse-blade sword at his throat. Aoshi met his eyes coldly.

“I win,” he said, his voice hard. Then he blinked, his eyes widening slightly, and repeated himself. “I win, that I do.”

“Yes,” Aoshi said quietly. “You win again. The same prize as always?”

The redhead shook his head, sheathing his sword. “No, I don’t want to sleep with you this time.”

Aoshi stood up from the floor. “That’s somewhat insulting.” His face, as always, showed no emotion whatsoever, but Kenshin understood that he was joking. At least, that counted as humor for him. Not that Aoshi Shinomori apparently even knew what a sense of humor was.

Kenshin smiled brightly. “Well, of course I do, I didn’t mean that. I just meant there’s something I want more than that.” He pulled Aoshi back down to the floor and sat straddling his thighs. “If you want to give me that too, for free, then I wouldn’t argue, that I wouldn’t.”

Aoshi tilted his head slightly, looking at him. “What do you want more than that?” His arms wrapped loosely around Kenshin’s waist.

Kenshin smiled brightly at him, closing his eyes as he did so. “I want a smile.”

“A smile?” Aoshi’s face again showed no expression, as he met Kenshin’s eyes when he opened them.

The redhead nodded. “Yes, Aoshi. I want you to smile.”

“I don’t smile.”

“I know.” He leaned forward and kissed Aoshi lightly, the black-haired man mostly unresponsive, but not completely. “I want to see you smile. It’s been years, but I’ve never seen you smile. I want to.”

Aoshi just looked at him. “I don’t smile, Kenshin. Find another prize.”

Kenshin smiled yet again at him. He smiled enough for the both of them. “I won’t. I want to see you smile, that I do, and I’m not letting you go until I do.” His arms rested possessively on Aoshi’s shoulders, as he tilted his own head to look at him curiously. “When was the last time you smiled?”

“I don’t know. Probably when I was a child. Why does it matter?” Cool blue eyes bored unblinkingly into expressive violet.

Kenshin shrugged slightly. “I don’t know. I want to see it, though. You have to smile at some point.”

“No, I don’t.” Aoshi seemed quietly emphatic, once Kenshin got past his cool exterior. “I don’t feel like smiling.”

“Do you even know how?” Kenshin looked at him curiously, with somewhat serious eyes.

“I don’t think so.” He said it matter-of-factly, as though saying that he didn’t know what time it was.

The answer made Kenshin somewhat saddened, though he didn’t show it. It just seemed wrong, that Aoshi would never smile. He was never happy… “All right,” he sighed. “I want to see it someday, though.”

Kenshin leaned down to kiss him, and Aoshi did respond to him, though it wasn’t wholly obvious. He was getting better, at least. The first time had been like sleeping with a pillow, Aoshi utterly refusing to respond to anything he did… after several years, at least he was loosening up. He had never let his emotions get the better of him, never made an undignified noise even at the height of passion, never been anything but wholly controlled and serious… but at least he was letting himself enjoy it. Maybe, if Kenshin was patient enough, he would eventually break through Aoshi’s shell, see his emotions, just once, take him over… see him smile… But until then, this was good, as he wrapped his arms tightly around him and kissed him deeply.

Aoshi lay on the hardwood floor, feeling the cool wood on his bare back. Kenshin was asleep, one arm draped over his chest, still holding him possessively, but Aoshi just lay there staring at the ceiling. He was thinking about what Kenshin had said to him, and his expression after he told him that he didn’t really know how to smile… He’d looked sad. It touched him, faintly, somewhere deep inside, that Kenshin would be sad for him.

He glanced at the shorter red-headed man beside him and thought about that. Slowly, his lips curved upward slightly, trying out the unfamiliar expression. It didn’t feel wrong, as he looked at Kenshin. Maybe he could learn…
